GCSE workshops
At KS4 (GCSE) in particular
it really helped students engage in
aspects of music that might otherwise be approached through
books, CDs and so on.

Aims:
“…to give students opportunities to develop their understanding
and appreciation of a range of different kinds of music, extending their
own interests…” (GCSE Subject Criteria)
The Bollywood Brass Band GCSE workshop will develop pupils’ understanding
of the context and structure of Bollywood music.
1 or 2 hour workshops consist of:
- classroom arrangements of a Bollywood tune
- school bands or ensembles working on music from our repertoire
- working towards a performance at the end of the workshop.

BOARDS:
These workshops will particularly link to the GCSE areas of study of
each board:
-Watching excerpts from Bollywood movies combined with a live  performance.
-Multi-media presentation
-Instrumental workshops
Content:
- Listening
Analysing the structure of an Bollywood song ie: verses/ chorus/interludes.
- Composing
Arranging Bollywood Brass Band material and exploring ways of decorating/varying
repetitions by adding harmony or counter lines.
At the end of the workshop a performance could be given.
- Performing
School ensembles can work on BBB material, they could do this through
learning by ear as well as from sheet music.
- Use of musical elements
Exploring musical elements such as interplay and contrast between: high/low,
solo/tutti, rhythm/melody, horns/drums, soft/loud. They could listen
and write out the main melody lines, bass lines and other interesting
instrumental parts.
They will also look at dramatic devices such as stops, drum break, solo
horn ensembles, cresc./dim
- Context/Cultural environment
Students will learn about the context of Bollywood film music, from
a historical and practical point of view, this can include watching
a video of a song from a Bollywood film.
- A Teachers' Pack
will be left with the school after the workshop to enable work on Bollywood
music to continue
